So today was Erin's birthday, and after a day of lectures and the beach we all went out to dinner at Al Capone's Seafood and Pizza. A few of us wanted to try to go out and do some night tide pooling and maybe see some octopodes, but we got back from dinner too late and the tide was already back in for the evening.

Dr C and Glenn were on their way to meet us down at the beach with their UV lights, and as it turns out we had just narrowly missed stepping on a few locals: the Giant Desert Hairy Scorpion (Hadrurus arizonensis).

They look pretty close to bark scorpions, so I did have to double check my sonoran desert guide when I got back to the dorm. They're stings are equivalent to honey bee stings, and are hardly venomous at all,but they get up to 5.5 inches and their diet includes lizards.

Many of the ones we found were smaller, but there was one that was a pretty decent size. The photo below is a size reference, that's my hand in the left corner.
